Potomac Society The Potomac Society brings together University alumni who presently serve as GW faculty and staff. The Society pays tribute to the unique relationship its members have with GW, as individuals whose professional lives are closely tied to their alma mater. The initial purpose of the Society is to engender fellowship among its members and promote the general welfare of the University. The name of the Potomac Society is derived from the Potomac Trading Company, shares of which George Washington left in his will for the distinct purpose of founding a national university in the nation's new capital, the City of Washington. The Potomac Society was founded in the fall of 2004. Membership is open to any current full-time faculty or staff member who has earned his or her academic degree from GW.
